Cape Town - Parliament's
ethics committee is to meet next month to consider its response to ANC Chief
Whip Tony Yengeni's answer to claims he failed to disclose a luxury vehicle on
the register of members' assets.
The meeting was provisionally set for May 8,
Registrar of Members' Interests Fazela Mohamed told Sapa on Wednesday.
She said she had discussed Yengeni's response
with committee chairwoman Sister Bernard Ncube, who had recommended the
committee meet once MPs returned to Parliament early next month.
Mohamed, who refused to comment on the substance
of the response, would present a report on the matter to the committee at the
meeting.
Yengeni met a third deadline to submit a response
regarding the claim on Thursday last week, after questioning the committee's
procedures in a previous submission.
Democratic Alliance Chief Whip Douglas Gibson
lodged the official complaint with the committee on April 6, following newspaper
claims that Yengeni had received a luxury vehicle as a "gift" from a
company involved in the controversial R43 billion arms deal.
Yengeni has previously denied any wrongdoing,
saying he acquired the Mercedes-Benz 4x4 vehicle legitimately.
According to a report in the Sunday Times at the
weekend, Yengeni has once again refused to answer the claim.
The
report says the latest submission is allegedly inadequate, and quotes one source
as saying Yengeni's response "did not solve anything".
