Parliament's watchdog Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) may see the resignation of at least one other opposition MP in the wake of Inkatha Freedom Party MP Dr Gavin Woods's decision to quit as its chairperson on Monday.
The person expected to leave is the Democratic Alliance MP, Raenette Taljaard, who Woods said also bore the brunt of African National Congress hostility on the committee. Woods said he would like to remain an ordinary committee member, but the decision was ultimately up to his party.
Meanwhile, United Democratic Movement deputy president Gerhard Koornhof said the committee was at a crossroads.
"We will either fall flat within two weeks or we will revive."
Koornhof said he did not believe it was impossible to resuscitate the committee, but that trust had to be re-established between its members.
Koornhof said he would quit if the committee could not be salvaged.
The ANC recommitted itself on Monday to giving the committee chairmanship to an opposition party MP.
Speculation is rife that instead of giving the post to the IFP again the ANC will opt to reward its new ally, the New National Party, in line with their co-operation pact.
Meanwhile, most opposition parties said it was "unfortunate" that Woods had resigned and praised him for his work.
Opposition parties were united in their call that the future chairperson of Scopa should be from opposition.
