PAC MP, Patricia De Lille, has accused President
Thabo Mbeki's office of inefficiency and lies. Speaking at the Johannesburg
Press Club last night, De Lille said 55 pages of information about the R43
billion arms deal were promised to her, but she has received only 35.
Due to the lack of information, De Lille is
unable to proceed with a judicial review of Mbeki's decision not to include the
Heath Unit in the arms deal probe.
De Lille had given the President until last
Friday to provide her with all the information required .
Her legal team announced that if Mbeki failed to
do so they would consider using coercive measures that will compel him to hand
over the information in court.
De Lille's legal team wants this information to
assess whether Mbeki applied his mind to the decision to exclude Heath from the
investigation.
Meanwhile Alec Erwin, trade and industry
minister, has rejected criticism brought on the counter trade agreements linked
to the arms deal.
Addressing Parliament's trade and industry
portfolio committee, Erwin described the job creation forecasts associated with
the deal as "fairly realistic" and dismissed suggestions that the
contracts will not be met.
He added that the government had undertaken
exhaustive studies of the likely impact of the deal and examined similar
undertakings in other countries.
