We Did Not Speak to Your Reporter

It appears from your report "Naval officer shielded by arms report changes" (January 11), by Paul Kirk, that one of the sources of his information was "one of the investigators who participated in over 18 hours of interviews with Kamerman, and who contributed to the original drafts of the report". The reporter also quotes verbatim from the mentioned investigator's notes.

I was one of the investigators who participated in the 18 hours interview with Rear Admiral Kamerman. The others were advocate Charles de Chermont, also of PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and Advocate Annemarie van der Colff of the Directorate of Specia Operations.

Of the investigators present at the interview, only advocate De Chermont and myself took part in the drafting of the report.

The three of us - advocate De Chermont, advocate Van der Colff and myself - deny having spoken to Mr Kirk or having given any information as referred to in the report to him, the M&G or any other reporter of the M&G. The innuendo that it was one of us who gave the information to Mr Kirk has impaired our integrity and credibility, and we demand that you publish a correction to the effect that not one of us was the source of the information.

For present purposes, we are not addressing the factual inaccuracies in the report.

Please let me know as soon as possible whether you are prepared to accede to our request.

This letter is written not merely on my own behalf, but also on behalf of advocates De Chermont and Van der Colff.
- Jan Swanepoel, Director, Forensic Services, PriceWaterhouseCoopers

The editor replies: The M&G does not comment on its sources. We are, therefore, unable to accede to the request in this letter.
