The state attorney has met the deadline set by
Pan Africanist Congress MP Patricia de Lille's lawyers to furnish them with the
information President Thabo Mbeki used to decide on the Heath unit's exclusion
from the R43-billion arms probe.
De Lille told Sapa her lawyer had received
"50 or so pages" by fax on Friday afternoon.
"We will look at it on Monday and then make
a decision."
On Thursday, the lawyers gave Mbeki until Friday
(today) to provide them with all the information. This followed an initial
request for information a week ago.
The lawyers require the information to assess
whether Mbeki applied his mind to the decision on January 19 to exclude Judge
Willem Heath's anti-corruption unit from the probe.
If Mbeki is found not to have done so, De Lille
will seek a judicial review of the decision, her lawyer Cecil Burgess said last
week.
De Lille is relying on sections 32 and 33 of the
Constitution which relates to access to information and just administrative
actions.
Mbeki's director-general Frank Chikane told
reporters on Thursday: "We have nothing to hide. We will make the
information available as requested by Ms De Lille's lawyers."
Chikane said most of the information was on the
government's website.
"Whatever we have we will make
available."
