On the eve of the tabling of the long-awaited arms deal
report, subpoenas against MP's from at least four political parties have been
revoked.
The Speaker of Parliament raised concern about the implications the subpoenas
would have for parliamentary privilege.
When the report is tabled tomorow, Frene Ginwala will make the unusual move of
asking the chief investigators to report directly to MPs. The investigation into
the deal is the largest ever in the new South Africa.
The government has apparently been cleared of any "improper or unlawful
conduct" regarding the multi-billion rand arms deal.
Those cleared include the President and Cabinet Ministers.
The Auditor-General Shauket Fakie, the Public Protector Selby Baqwa, and the
National Director of Public Prosecutions, Bulelani Ngcuka have been
investigating corruption, conflict of interest and undue process in the purchase
of new defence stock.
They say there are no grounds to suggest that government's contracting process
was flawed and say their findings resulted from a lengthy criminal and forensic
investigation.
Public hearings were also conducted.
