Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance's Raenette Taljaard has left parliament's troubled standing committee on public accounts (Scopa), two weeks after the resignation of its chairperson, Gavin Woods.

DA sources confirmed she is to be replaced as the party's Scopa spokesperson by Mark Lowe, a former KwaZulu-Natal legislature public accounts committee member. Nigel Bruce remains as the second DA Scopa member.

Taljaard is to take over from Ken Andrew - who will head a DA policy development project - on the finance portfolio committee.

Woods (IFP) announced his resignation from the chairmanship last month, citing political interference in the committee's work, and its polarisation, particularly regarding the multi-billion rand arms deal.

He said at the time that Taljaard, along with himself, had borne the brunt of African National Congress hostility on the committee.

Earlier this week, the ANC's Vincent Smith was appointed interim chairperson of Scopa, marking the first time that an opposition party member has not led the crucial oversight committee.

Taljaard was redeployed to Scopa in January last year to help strengthen the DA's contingent on the committee during its oversight work on the arms deal.
