Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance (DA) called on auditor-general Shauket Fakie yesterday to release the draft reports of the joint investigating team into the R60bn arms deal or resign.

This follows revelations that the report released was substantially edited. DA arms deal spokeswoman Raenette Taljaard said that Parliament's public accounts committee (Scopa) should reopen its investigation into the arms deal.

Rear-Admiral Johnny Kamerman should also be suspended pending an investigation into what appeared to be a prima facie case of corruption.

It had emerged Kamerman project officer of the corvette programme, received a "farewell gift" of R7000 from African Defence Systems, a successful bidders, while he was the project officer for the corvette programme.

Taljaard said Fakie had to "come clean" on executive pressure applied to him. "He must say who decided that the sections of the report titled "Inaccuracies presented to Scopa" should not form part of the final report.

"It is clear that someone decided Parliament should not know that Chippy Shaik (former chief of acquisitions) lied to Scopa in October 2000.

"As the first drafts of the arms-deal report surface, it is quite clear that the damage done to SA's democratic institutions has been considerable.

"The auditor-general, the relevant cabinet ministers, the former chief of acquisitions and department of defence officials have much to answer for."
