Former African National Congress chief whip in the National Assembly Tony Yengeni, who is facing fraud and corruption charges, gained the support of 2 047 of 3 000 voting delegates for a position on the ruling party's national executive committee.

Yengeni resigned his post last year upon being charged in connection with the arms deal but remains an ordinary Member of Parliament.

His former deputy chief whip, Geoff Doidge, who is now chairperson of parliamentary committees, failed to make it onto the new NEC, having gained just 637 votes and coming in 89th of 100 candidates for 60 positions.

Yengeni came in at 43rd place.

The chairperson of the trade and industry portfolio committee in the National Assembly, Rob Davies, achieved just 478 votes coming in in 95th place - and thus did not make it by far.

Former KwaZulu Natal Housing MEC Dumisani Makhaye, fired recently by Inkatha Freedom Party KZN Premier Lionel Mtshali, makes it on to the NEC in 42nd place with 2 074 votes.

Nedlac boss and SACP member Phillip Dexter made it with 1 749 votes coming in at 51st place. Nail boss Sakumzi (Saki) Macozoma came 47th with 2 093 votes in 47th place.

Newly elected Cape Town metro mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo did not make it gaining just 926 votes and coming in at 75th position. However, Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo made it with 1 736 votes in 52nd position.

Former Home Affairs director general Billy Masetlha, now in the office of the president, did not make it with 646 votes (87th).
