Auditor-General Shauket Fakie says claims that information was omitted from the final report on the arms deal probe are unfounded.

In a long special report tabled in the national assembly yesterday, he suggests some MPs have transgressed rule 66 of parliament by casting aspersions on the integrity and dignity of the auditor-general's office.

"I am concerned there has been an effort by certain individuals to discredit me and my office. Allegations are based on insufficient and inconclusive evidence during a period when sensational reporting by the media was rife.

"Based on the evidence at my disposal, I stand by the (joint investigating team's) report."

Fakie called on parliament to protect the honour of the office of the auditor-general, an independent institution protected by the constitution.

He said the nature of a draft report implied it could be changed. The final report was a consolidation of three probes.

"The consolidation ... dictated the elimination of duplication and technical details."

It should be obvious to anyone reading the draft and final reports that there had been no intention to omit details.

Parliament's special committee on public accounts is to consider Fakie's special report after the winter recess.
