Freedom Front leader Dr Pieter Mulder added his party's voice on Wednesday to calls for a commission of inquiry to investigate new facts regarding the arms deal.

President Thabo Mbeki should immediately appoint such a commission, consisting of three judges of appeal, he said in a statement.

"Every day, new facts come to light. Some of these facts indicate the possibility that the African National Congress as an organisation also benefited from the arms purchases," he said.

A multiparty parliamentary commission, as proposed by the Democratic Alliance, was not the answer because it would most probably end with a majority ANC report and a minority opposition party report.

The arms deal had already been investigated by Parliament, by the Auditor General and by the Scorpions, without any of them reaching satisfactory answers.

Only an independent investigation, which would reveal all the facts regarding the arms purchases, could finally solve the problem.

Because it had been decided not to prosecute Deputy President Jacob Zuma, the appointment of such a commission would also be the only way through which clarity could be obtained on his position, Mulder said.
