Reporters experienced some of the capabilities of the South African Navy's newest ship when they were invited on board the SAS Amatola before she was put through her paces in False Bay.

"Welcome to the most modern warship in the world," said Captain Guy Jamieson after the party had boarded the huge grey vessel along a metal gangway.

The media were taken on a tour of the 121-metre ship: the machine control room, forecastle, bridge, crew's quarters, a recreational area and a decontamination room in the event of biological or chemical attack.

"The air in the vessel was set five millibars higher than atmospheric pressure," said Warrant Officer Malcolm Jackson, explaining that this was designed to combat biological and chemical agents. He pointed out fire retardant material throughout the ship, which has eight decks with ample room and broad gangways.

Rear Admiral Johnny Kamerman said of the ship's capabilities: "The design features of the Meko A200 SAN platform incorporates stealth design with very low radar, acoustic and magnetic signatures. It is the first major warship in the world with a horizontal exhaust and waterjet propulsion, and has an X-form outer hull."

It also has a hospital aboard.

The ship is to have its weapons systems fitted in the next few months. It will start sea acceptance trials next year and is expected to be fully operational in 2005.
