Your leader, Hefer's choice (November 14), that the Hefer commission would have to decide that a conclusion cannot be reached in the event that those making the accusations cannot, will not or do not come forward with the information they have, makes no sense.

In this event and perhaps you should have said "information they say they have" the commission should conclude that since the accusers have not presented the evidence there is no case to answer and innocence must be presumed.

Because of the president's intervention regarding information held by the intelligence agencies, the commission has a chance to escape the cul-de-sac into which it was led.

The commission should not be manoeuvred into a position where it must give comfort to those who make reckless accusations because a negative cannot be proven.
