The SA Navy will be conducting firing tests at the SA Naval Dockyard in Simon's Town today and tomorrow between 7am and 4pm.

A navy statement said a harbour patrol boat would be stationed in the area to ensure that no marine mammals, vessels or aircraft entered the firing area.

They would also have lookouts who would alert ships and units if whales entered the firing area.

Nan Rice, of the Dolphin Action and Protection Group, said yesterday the noise from weapons being fired above the water was not considered a problem for whales and dolphins.

It was underwater noise which disturbed these animals, she said.
