Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota has the qualities that the president of SA would need to meet the demands of the next stage of transformation, according to political analyst Xolela Mangcu.

Internal debate over the successor to President Thabo Mbeki has intensified as the African National Congress (ANC) prepares for it's conference in two years' time. The conference will choose a new leader who will be the ANC's presidential candidate in the 2009 election.

Various candidates have been suggested as alternatives to Deputy President Jacob Zuma should the fallout from the corruption trial of his financial advisor Schabir Shaik prevent him from securing the position. These include Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosozana Dlamini-Zuma and businessman Cyril Ramaphosa.
