Durban - A number of television and radio stations are poised to reapply this morning for permission to broadcast the businessman Schabir Shaik's trial here.

In their renewed application, the SABC, Radio 702 and Cape Talk are asking the high court here for permission to broadcast the testimonies of witnesses on radio. The SABC and e.tv also want to broadcast argument by legal counsel.

The television application comes within a week of the Cape High Court allowing the SABC to film argument in Mark Thatcher's application for an order setting aside a subpoena that requires him to answer questions about an alleged coup plot in Equitorial Guinea.

Today's focus will be on radio.

In an earlier application by Midi TV, the company that runs e.tv, Justice Hilary Squires made it clear he would not allow the filming of witnesses's testimony in Shaik's trial as camera crews were intrusive.

Lawyers who studied his judgement believe he may have "left the door" ajar for radio.

Guido Penzhorn, SC, who is advising the state's legal team, and Shaik are to oppose the application.
