The African National Congress (ANC) Youth League is correct: Deputy President Jacob Zuma must succeed President Thabo Mbeki at the end of his term. This is the historical culture and tradition of the ANC and its structures.

The national executive committee of the youth league carries the rich history of the ANC, and won't want to upset their forefathers by adopting unknown cultures and traditions.

Xolela Mangcu's article, Lekota has what it takes to be a people's president (January 27), does not reflect the views of ANC members and the party's culture of cadreship development. But Mangcu, like all academics and intellectuals, is entitled to express his views as a South African citizen.

I concur with the youth league that Zuma must be next president of the ANC. Whatever is said about him must be proved in a court of law, and not by individuals pursuing personal ambitions.
