Durban: Although former deputy president Jacob Zuma will appear in the magistrate's court here this week, it could take more than year before he actually stands trial on corruption charges.

And he could well face more than the two corruption charges which involve his financial adviser Schabir Shaik.

Sources close to the investigation revealed yesterday that Zuma's dealings with others could also be scrutinised.

At the time of taking Shaik to trial, the probe by Scorpions investigators Johan du Plooy and Isak du Plooy was complete.

But some issues that emerged during the trial will undoubtedly be followed up.

It is likely that this week's court appearance will be very brief.

Lawyers acting for Zuma - who are as yet unknown - will negotiate with the NPA a time, date, bail conditions and next court date, before he even enters the courtroom.

The next step will be for the Scorpions to complete its investigation, draw up a final indictment and organise trial dates.

At least two months will have to be set aside in the high court here and a judge to hear the matter will have to be appointed by Judge President Vuka Tshabalala.

Tshabalala declined to comment yesterday on who he is considering for the job.

At this stage, indications are that the NPA will use the same prosecuting team for Zuma's trial.
