Yengeni Tries to Avoid Jail

Disgraced former ANC chief whip Tony Yengeni has applied to the Pretoria High Court for leave to appeal against the sentence of four years imposed on him for fraud and, depending on the availability of the judges concerned, the matter might be heard before the end of the year.

His attorney, Marius du Toit, said that papers asking for the right to continue his challenge in the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein had been lodged following a decision last month by two Pretoria judges, who confirmed Yengeni’s conviction and sentence. In a case such as this, the accused would have 15 court days to note an application for leave to appeal, and Yengeni did so on the last day possible, last week.
