Cosatu says No to Corruption

Media Statement

Cosatu

18 July 2005

The Congress of South African Trade Unions reaffirms its total and consistent opposition to corruption. We will cooperate in uncovering any forms of corruption, whether in the public or private sector and will press for severe penalties against anyone found guilty.

COSATU also however insists that no-one is guilty of corruption until it is proved in court *1 and no-one should be condemned in advance of such a verdict. We therefore support the call for a full and speedy inquiry by the Public Protector into recent allegations in the media concerning ‘Oilgate’ and the Land Bank, to establish the facts in these cases and to end the uncertainty.

We urge those with information to come forward and disclose this to the Public Protector *2.

Should the inquiry reveal evidence of corruption, then the law must take its course and anyone found guilty dealt with as prescribed under the law.

With ackowledgement to Cosatu.

*1 *2   A surefire recipe for ensuring that no-one is guilty of corruption until it is proved in court.

This is something akin to a tautology.
