The Schabir Shaik verdict has set a precedent for the relations between politics and business to be examined in a different light.

Given the criticism levelled at political leaders who explore business interests while in public office, there should be further investigations into the business transactions that have benefited high-ranking public officials.

There have been many reports of public officials who have used their positions to benefit their relatives and friends.

Deputy President Jacob Zuma has been crucial in SA’s diplomatic missions in Africa aimed at bringing peace and stability to conflict-ridden regions. After the Shaik verdict, his credibility in such forums will definitely suffer a setback.

It has become more than apparent that politics is being used as a launching pad for business careers or as a passport to financial stability. Business pulls the strings for political favours and politicians make concessions for their self- enrichment.
