Durban - The corruption case against former deputy president Jacob Zuma was postponed to Saturday November 12 in Durban magistrate's court on Tuesday with the agreement of both the State and the defence.

Prosecutor Billy Downer told the court the postponement would allow the State to serve an indictment on Zuma.

It would also give the State and the defence time to arrange a high court trial date in consultation with Natal Judge President Vuka Tshabalala, and enable further investigation.

The court was told the next hearing had been set down for a Saturday to prevent further disruption of other court proceedings - delayed on Tuesday while the Zuma case proceeded.

His bail was extended.

Zuma was expected to address his supporters outside the court. Many of them had been there all night.

So far, Zuma faces two charges of contravening the Corruption Act, brought after the conviction and sentencing of his former financial adviser Schabir Shaik on fraud and corruption charges. Shaik is out on bail pending appeal.

Several high profile people were at the Durban magistrate's court for the appearance, including Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) secretary-general Zwelinzima Vavi, KwaZulu-Natal premier S'bu Ndebele, African National Congress (ANC) head of publicity Smuts Ngonyama, ANC secretary-general Kgalema Motlanthe, former ANC chief whip Tony Yengeni, Mo Shaik and KwaZulu-Natal economic affairs MEC Zweli Mkhize.

Zuma is deputy president of the ANC.
