Police chalk marks, broken glass and a discarded mortuary attendant's rubber glove forgotten in the gutter were all that marked the scene on a Johannesburg highway bridge, early on Wednesday morning, where controversial mining magnate Brett Kebble died alone in a hail of bullets as he drove to dinner on Tuesday night.

Details were still sketchy but police spokesman Chris Wilken confirmed Kebble's body was found slumped in the driver's seat of his luxury Mercedes saloon where it had come to a halt, crunching a headlight into the bridge railing on Melrose Street over the main Johannesburg-Pretoria highway.

"A number of shots were fired at the car and a number of shots hit him. He died at the scene," Wilken said.

Although a full investigation had not yet started, it appeared nothing had been stolen from the silver grey vehicle.

The actual number of times Kebble had been shot would also only be determined later on Wednesday.

Police and Kebble family security officials at the scene declined to release any further details about the shooting and nobody would comment on the possibility that the controversial businessman and art patron had been "hit" by assassins.

Detectives and forensics experts combed the scene for hours after the 9pm shooting and finally gave the-go ahead for the body and car to be removed around 2am.

Police and security vehicles were drawn up in a tight laager around the vehicle to shield the removal of the body from press photographers.

Kebble, 41, was recently forced to resign from the boards of JCI, Western Areas and Randgold and Exploration amid mounting controversy, pressure and alleged financial irregularities.
