Convicted businessman Schabir Shaik on Thursday bid his family farewell before being taken to Durban's Westville Prison.

"I wish my family all of the very best, especially my wife and my child.

"To all the reporters I've given a hard time, I apologize.

"My heart is at peace and I am walking in the path of my lord," he told reporters at the Durban High Court shortly after having his fingerprints taken.

He was then taken to the prison in the back of a police van.

He was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for fraud and corruption.
