IFP President Mangosuthu Buthelezi launched a stinging attack on the ANC yesterday, saying the ruling party is paying lip service to the South Africans when it somes to fighting crime.

Buthelezi said the IFP has noted that the ANC has repeatedly condemned corruption verbally, but remains non-committal in practice.

He was addressing the party’s Women’s Brigade Conference in Umlazi, Durban.

He said: “I often wondered why a party so obsessed with intervention and regulation as the ANC should abandon ubuntu and remain silent on graft.

“This government has its finger stuck in just about every other pie, so why not act against the culture of corruption it helped to perpetuate?”

He said the IFP would demonstrate its stance on corruption by expelling corrupt councillors.

He asked women in the IFP to be at the forefront of the party’s battle to win the upcoming local government election. He reiterated that the IFP’s manifesto pushes honour, service and delivery.

Buthelezi was also critical of the ANC’s delivery of services.

He said that as this is the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the constitution, the ANC will be keen to derive as much publicity as possible from the celebrations.

“Yet no layer of glitzy patina can disguise the fact that half of SA’s population live below [the] poverty line,” he said.
