Lawyers for former deputy president Jacob Zuma still intend filing papers opposing the state's application for a postponement of next week's corruption trial, Zuma's attorney said on Tuesday.

"We haven't filed (the application) yet, but we will be doing it later in the week. I can't give an indication when," Michael Hulley told Sapa.

"It's been a long time coming. The state has given fair notice of their application and it has always been our intention to oppose it."

He said that he and the legal team assembled to handle the case were ready for the start of the long-awaited trial, which begins in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday.

There would be one addition to the team which ensured Zuma's acquittal earlier this year on a charge of raping a woman who considered herself to be a family friend.

Kemp J Kemp, Jerome Brauns, Tandanani Mbongwa and a fourth person whose name Hulley declined to provide, would defend Zuma.

Hulley said he would prefer not comment on what Zuma would be doing in the days leading up to the start of the trial.

The charges that led to the trial emanated from the fraud and corruption trial of Zuma's financial adviser Schabir Shaik.
