Jacob Zuma would decide later whether to comment on the rejection of Schabir Shaik's appeal, one his aides said on Monday.

Ranjeni Munsamy said Zuma was abroad and was only expected back in the country at the end of the week.

She said: "Only when he is back, will he make a decision on whether to comment (on the Shaik appeal)."

The appeal of Shaik, Zuma's former financial advisor, against his fraud and corruption convictions was dismissed in the Supreme Court of Appeal on Monday.

The court also upheld a finding last year by Durban High Court Judge Hilary Squires that the relationship between Zuma and Shaik had been "generally corrupt".

Experts have agreed that the outcome of Shaik's appeal would have a direct bearing on a decision by the State on whether to re-open a corruption case against Zuma.

The matter was struck off the roll in the Pietermaritzburg High Court earlier in the year, when the State was unable to proceed with its prosecution without delay.

Zuma's attorney Michael Hulley could not be reached for comment on Monday.
