The prosecuting team responsible for the successful conviction on fraud and corruption charges of Jacob Zuma's financial adviser Schabir Shaik, were named prosecutors of the year this week.

Advocates Billy Downer SC, Anton Steynberg and former state prosecutor Santos Manilall won the award at the annual meeting of the State Advocates' Society of South Africa.

Previous winners of the award include Anton Ackermann SC, for the prosecution of Wouter Basson, former Scorpions advocate Gerda Ferreira for the prosecution of Tony Yengeni, and state advocate Anthony Stephen for the prosecution of the perpetrators of the Sizzlers nightclub massacre.

Stephen Powell, of the firm Sonnenberg Hoffmann & Galombik - which sponsored the prize - said they were delighted that Downer and his team had won.

Society chairperson Carine Teunissen said they won because of the extraordinary lengths they had to go to overcome difficulties.

The prosecuting team responsible for the conviction on fraud and corruption charges of Schabir Shaik were named SA's Prosecutors of the Year this week.

An infinitely well deserved recognition.

When their turns come up, Johan du Plooy and Isaak du Plooy must be in line for investigators of the year, while Johan van der Walt and Team must be in line for Bloodhounds of the Year.
