African Eye News Service (AENS) incorrectly reported last week that former City Press editor Vusi Mona was fired for failing to disclose his business interests and failing to manage conflicts of interest. It has been established this week that while an internal Media24 probe did find that Mona's shareholding in a public relations company constituted a conflict of interest with his duties as editor, he was not fired. Mona instead resigned as part of a settlement agreement with his employer.
The company in which Mona held shares, Rainbow Kwanda Communications, is at the centre of a R30m fraud and corruption trial in Mpumalanga where it is accused of paying bribes to government officials in return for contracts.
Witnesses testified last week that Mona helped broker the deals and facilitated the meetings where bribes were discussed. AENS apologises for any inconvenience caused.
