The DA has called on the Department of Correctional Services to meet its mandated obligations of openness and transparency by disclosing the conditions of former ANC chief whip Tony Yengeni's correctional supervision.

In seeking the details, the DA has invoked the Promotion of Access to Information Act, party spokesman James Selfe says.

The act gives the department 30 days to respond.

Selfe said the department had long emphasised that the community had a responsibility to assist the reintegration into society of people freed on parole or under supervision.

But, for the community to do so effectively, it needed to know the conditions of correctional supervision or parole.

"We have reason to believe Mr Yengeni has not complied with his … conditions."

A letter written on February 16 to Minister of Correctional Services Ngconde Balfour had failed to elicit a response from the department, so the DA was compelled to use the act.

Yengeni was freed in January after serving four months of a four-year term for fraud.
