Durban: Jacob Zuma yesterday paid a R500 admission of guilty fine for failing to disclose information to the taxman.

His attorney, Michael Hulley, paid the fine on his behalf and the case against him - contravening the Income Tax Act - was removed from the roll.

Zuma's tax woes began in July 2005 when the SA Revenue Service wrote to him demanding that he provide further information and documentation to back up his tax returns, a request repeated a year later. When he failed to comply, a summons was served on him in December to appear in a tax court here in February.

Hulley appeared twice on his behalf and a warrant for his arrest was stayed on both occasions. It is believed that during this period, Hulley was negotiating with tax officials.

It is believed that the probe into Zuma's tax affairs was in part prompted by evidence during the corruption and fraud trial of his former business adviser, Schabir Shaik.
