A senior correctional officer has been assigned to supervise Tony Yengeni's community service.

The convicted fraudster reported at Cape Town's Community Corrections Centre (Commcor) yesterday after his release last Monday.

Yengeni spent more than an hour at the city office, where the officer - whose identity is known to the Cape Argus - was assigned.

This was his second visit to the Commcor office this week, his first being on Monday, when he slipped unnoticed into the Commcor office behind the Cape Town Regional Court, according to prison sources.

According to a source, the Malmesbury Commcor office - which Yengeni had reported to when he was released on Monday - had transferred Yengeni to the Cape Town office as "plans did not work out".

Yengeni's correctional officer was due to inform him this week where he would perform his correctional supervision, "but they are still looking around".

Repeated efforts by the Cape Argus to get official comment from Luphumzo Kebeni, spokesman for national Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour, failed.

Last week questions were raised by correctional supervision experts about whether Yengeni's registration and release procedure deviated from normal practice.

They told the Cape Argus last week that Yengeni, who served four months of a four-year sentence, should have registered at the Cape Town office because he lives in Milnerton, which falls within the city's jurisdiction.
