Schabir
Shaik plans to seek clemency from President Thabo
Mbeki as a last resort if his appeal to the
Constitutional Court fails.
This is according to his brother, Mo, who
yesterday said that they have given the Constitutional Court their routine 10
days to respond to the appeal.
"The state has lodged its objections and
complaints in regard to the case and we in turn have lodged our appeal to the
Constitutional Court. The Constitutional Court has 10 days to get a response to
us.
"We have indicated why the state's objections
are erroneous and we have shown that we have legitimate grounds for appeal. Should our appeal to the
Constitutional Court fail, we will make a direct appeal to President Mbeki for
clemency on grounds of Schabir's medical condition."
At the time of lodging his appeal to the Constitutional Court, Shaik's
defence team said they regarded his trial as "unfair"
because he hadn't been charged together with Jacob Zuma or the French arms
manufacturing giant Thint *1.
Shaik has already amassed a hospital bill of more than R600 000 *2 and his medical aid
company Discovery Health are investigating claims of his condition before making
any payments.
With acknowledgement to Saturday Independent.
*1 This is the only bit of sense
amongst the rest of the nonsense.
But it wasn't unfair for Shaik, it was
unfair for The People.
It also let off a criminal person and a criminal
company and cost The People a lot more
money.
*2 Another ripoff?
