Former ANC chief Whip Tony Yengeni is not fulfilling his parole obligations, DA MP James Selfe said.

Responding to the President’s State of the Nation address, Selfe said Yengeni had only reported once to the Educare Centre where he is to perform his community service.

Yengeni was convicted in 2003 of defrauding parliament by failing to disclose a 47 percent discount on a luxury 4X4 Mercedes-Benz.

According to Selfe – the DA member on the National Assembly’s portfolio committee for Correctional Services – Yengeni is required to do 16 hours of work at the centre a month.

“According to my information he has only reported once for duty and that was two weekends ago,” he said.

Yengeni was released from Malmesbury Prison on January 15 after serving 20 weeks of a four-year sentence thanks to a special amnesty. Selfe on Wednesday asked why Yengeni was not arrested.

"This is a parole violation, which would mean re-arrest if he had been an ordinary inmate," he argued.

He said it sent out the message that there was one set of standards for the "politically connected".

On Wednesday morning the ministry of correctional services could not clarify whether Yengeni was complying with his correctional supervisions or not.
