Nic Wolpe’s evasive replies to questions from the SABC about his business venture at the African National Congress (ANC) conference would have been hilarious, were they not downright worrying.
He managed to make what should be a straightforward commercial and fundraising event sound absolutely dodgy. Clearly he was under pressure from the ANC to “say nothing” to the press which might undermine the party’s denials.
What is worrying is that it reveals that the ANC (or significant elements therein) do not understand the difference between a dodgy deal (such as the arms deal) and a legitimate fundraising venture. There is nothing wrong with businesses contributing to ANC coffers, directly or via a fundraiser of this kind. Indeed, this sort of open marketplace at least lets us know which businesses are contributing and how much they are paying for the privilege of up-close exposure to the ANC. Many people will be there to see exactly who has paid to be in that marquee.
Of course there is always the risk that business, by paying the piper, will call the tune. But if such payments are there for all to see, then appropriate checks and balances come into play. Brave MPs might ask awkward questions when tenders are decided, the public is better informed, the press know who to watch and we can all keep an “eye on the money”.
It would be a healthy move for our democracy if all political parties fully disclosed their source of funds.
