The "world's biggest liar" has been crowned, after telling a tale about a German Second World War submarine invading Britain to capture digital TV decoders. John "Johnny Liar" Graham, 69, claimed he stumbled across the U-boat as it prepared a raid on the nearby town of Whitehaven .

Graham, who has won the title five times before, also said he caught a cod that was 2,7m long, reports Sapa-AFP.

The event, which draws tourists and competitors from around the world, is a homage to a local pub owner called Will Ritson, who regaled his regulars with tall tales in the 19th century. Competitors have five minutes to tell the biggest fib without the aid of props. Politicians and lawyers are barred *1 from entering as they are judged to be too skilled at telling lies *2.

*1*2    It is a great pity that Thabo Mbeki can't enter this competition because he would win it hands down.

He would also probably get the Will Ritson Pub to sell its prize money as credits to British Aerospace which it could then claim as  offset credits from the Department of Trade and Industry in its National Industrial Participation (NIP) programme.

Or do I win the prize?

Or does Chris McGreal win the prize?
