Shaik Back in Hospital After Mild Stroke

Schabir Shaik is back in hospital after suffering a mild stroke last week, the Department of Correctional services said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Manelisi Wolela confirmed Shaik suffered a mild stroke and had been transferred from prison to the Inkosi Albert Luthuli hospital in Durban.

"Shaik had some medical complications in prison and doctors advised he should be taken to hospital for further medical treatment. He was sent to hospital on November 10 after doctors advised it would be best for his health," he said.

The department declined to comment on Shaik's condition or state when he might be released from hospital.

Shaik has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for fraud relating to his relationship with former deputy president Jacob Zuma.

He was transferred to Qalakabusha prison and on November 24 last year he was admitted to St Augustine's hospital. At that time his family said he had suffered a minor stroke.

He had been treated for high blood pressure since being admitted to hospital on November 24, running up a bill of what some analysts believed could be more than R500 000.

Shaik was removed from St Augustine's hospital in Durban and sent to Westville Prison following an order from Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour.

In April this year Shaik was admitted to the cardiac unit in Albert Luthuli Hospital after suffering from hypertension and depression.

The profit of crime is clearly unhealthy and depressing.

A big fillip in ameliorating there against would be some good company, maybe make up a contract bridge foursome.

Contract bridge insulated us against those beastly studies in things like theoretical mechanics and circuit theory for a goodly number of years.

It can do the same again.

A nice foursome of Schabir, Jacob, Alain and Pierre sounds just right to me.

They can liven up matters by placing small bets of 500 kWSR *1 per rubber.

When Schabir gets out in a few years time his place can be taken by Thabo.
