Political analyst Adam Habib says suspended NPA chief Vusi Pikoli can be seen as another victim of a witchhunt, SABC news reported on Tuesday.

"That is what we are beginning to see. He is going to be seen as another victim of the succession crisis," Habib told the public broadcaster.

"We have seen this happening in intelligence and we have seen this happening in various provincial departments. People are going to be very concerned that this is a witchhunt happening in the state apparatus," he said.

Earlier, government spokesperson Themba Maseko said President Thabo Mbeki held several discussions with Pikoli before his suspension.

Mbeki announced that Pikoli was suspended because of a breakdown in his working relationship with Justice Minister Brigitte Mabandla.

Mbeki has appointed deputy national director Mokotedi Mpshe to act in Pikoli's position. All matters pertaining to the role of the National Prosecuting Authority are now being probed.

The National Directorate of Public Prosecutions was expected to release more details *1 on Tuesday regarding Pikoli's suspension, the SABC reported
