Convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik has been readmitted to Durban's Inkosi
Albert Luthuli Central Hospital because of fears that his blood pressure problem
is deteriorating and that certain of his organs could be damaged.
Shaik has spent much time in hospital, due to reported ill health, since
beginning his 15-year sentence in November 2006 following his conviction in 2005
on fraud and corruption charges.
His brother Yunus Shaik yesterday confirmed that he had been admitted to
hospital due to his worsening condition. "As yet we don't know the exact date
that he was admitted. But he was taken in for high blood pressure and damage to
his organs."
Correctional Services Department spokesperson Manelisi Wolela kept a tight lid
on details surrounding Shaik's admittance.
"He did go in (to hospital) this week. Prior to that he was at Westville
Correctional Centre. But we will not give out any further information regarding
his condition and how long he is expected to stay in hospital," Wolela said.
