The police station commander who announced the drunk driving arrest of Tony
Yengeni has lost his job, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.
Superintendent Sphiwo Hewana was found guilty on six charges of serious
misconduct at a disciplinary hearing in Cape Town on Tuesday, after an
investigation linked him to a cover-up of the arrest.
"Hewana was sanctioned with a dismissal from the
South African Police Service with immediate effect," said Superintendent Andre
Traut.
Hewana, head of the Goodwood police station, was suspended without pay last year
December.
He allegedly made conflicting statements relating to the arrest of Yengeni,
former ANC chief whip and convicted fraudster, for allegedly driving drunk in
Goodwood in November last year.
"Hewana still faces charges of attempting to defeat the
ends of justice and incitement to commit perjury; these are still being
investigated," Traut said.
