There can be no doubt that the charges Jacob Zuma faces will in no way affect his popularity. While he must be presumed innocent until proven guilty, a cloud hovers over his reputation and integrity, as a court of law is the only avenue for him to prove his innocence.

The clamour against the charges by individuals and organisations should be viewed as a disservice to him.

Similarly, national police commissioner Jackie Selebi will never be able to clear his name and reputation except via the courts.

Too true, but there is not only a cloud a hovering, but the very real possibility of 10 or so 15-year minimum custodial sentences.

A no-nonsense judge might even be inclined to make a couple of the sentences consecutive or to impose a harsher sentence for racketeering with a foreign corporate criminal and attempting to undermine the very fabric of governance in exchange for a few pieces of silver.
