Goodwood police station commissioner Siphiwo Hewana has been dismissed from the SA Police Services after he was found guilty at a police internal hearing of defeating the ends of justice.

Hewana has been at the centre of a row over the arrest of former ANC chief whip and convicted fraudster Tony Yengeni for alleged drunken driving in November.

He was accused by Western Cape police chief Mzwandile Petros of covering up for Yengeni by giving conflicting times of arrest.

It has taken more than three months for the police department to decide on Hewana future after he was suspended without pay from the police on December 6.

The disciplinary hearing which started on February 5 and was due to be wrapped up within four days, had seen several postponements before the pronouncement today.

The hearing held at Customs House on the Foreshore was chaired by SAPS Director Greg Goss from the Eastern Cape.

No further details regarding the disciplinary hearing was available at the time of going to press.
