Prospects for a crime-free South Africa governed by an untainted government have been dealt a severe blow with the instructions to Thabo Mbeki by the ANC Executive Committee to disband the Scorpions (The Mercury, January 21).
Organised crime, fraud, corruption, environmental pirating, smuggling, drug-dealing and the myriad other more sophisticated crimes beyond the capabilities of the investigative competency of the South African Police Service have been given the green light.
The likes of Schabir Shaik, Jacob Zuma (with his pending court appearance), Jackie Selebi (ditto), Glenn Agliotti, the late Brett Kebble, Travelgate MPs, Tony Yengeni, et al, must be jumping for joy.
An 88% success rate is good enough for me - plus millions of rands returned to the state and to the public. Is there an underlying concern among role-playing ANC members that they are next? What are they scared of? The fox now has total control of the chicken coup. The rot has truly set in.
