1       Gets rid of Heath on distorted grounds
Judge Willem Heath and his investigating unit are excluded from the Arms Deal probe

2       Writes the Scopa letter
Mbeki writes a letter, signed by Zuma, pressuring the standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) after it finds irregularities in the arms deal

3       Influences a report
A report by the Joint Investigating Team (JIT) is furiously re-written before presentation to Parliament

4       Interferes with a Commission
Forces the Hefer commission to shift its focus to claims by Mo Shaik and Mac Maharaj instead of allowing spying accusations against Bulelani Ngcuka to be determined objectively

5       Pooh-poohs the British probe
The British Serious Fraud Office (SFO) tries to probe suspected corruption in the South African arms deal. Mbeki says in an interview that SA's official conclusions will stand whatever the British do.

Actually the biggest known and prima facie proven interference of all by Mbeki in the Arms Deal was his direct and unlawful involvement with Thomson-CSF in its award of the combat suite contract.

Everything else flowed from that - the rest of the misconduct is cover up of the original criminal deed.

Just like one of my other favorite politicians of all time, Tricky Dicky Nixon.

Too clever by half.
