The Scorpions have, for the first time, confirmed that they have reopened the investigation into the controversial multibillion-rand arms deal, the Sunday Times reported.

Scorpions spokesperson Tlali Tlali refused to provide details, but confirmed that the unit's former boss, Leonard McCarthy, had ordered it after new evidence emerged in February.

The Sunday Times has established that the focus of the new probe includes alleged kickbacks paid to politicians and government officials.

ANC spokesperson Jessie Duarte said the ANC would defend itself against any allegation of wrongdoing.

She challenged the Scorpions to produce evidence showing the party had acted improperly.

In a statement on Friday, Duarte announced that an ANC task team appointed to probe Zuma's role in the arms deal had found there is "no link" between the ANC president and the arms procurement processes *1. - Sapa
