Convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik has been readmitted to Inkosi Albert
Luthuli Central hospital in Durban, apparently because his blood pressure was
getting worse and some of his doctors feared organs could be damaged.
Shaik has spent a significant amount of time in hospital since beginning his
15-year sentence for fraud and corruption in 2006.
On Wednesday Shaik's brother, Yunus, said: "As yet we don't know the exact date
that he was admitted.
"But he was taken in for high blood pressure and damage to his organs. It is
similar to the last few times (he was admitted to hospital), but we feel that he
is progressively deteriorating."
Last year The Mercury, Pretoria News' sister newspaper, came into possession of
some of Shaik's medical reports.
At the time, cardiologists S Ponnusamy and S Khan, who had been treating Shaik
at Albert Luthuli hospital, reported that Shaik suffered from severe
hypertension.
Their report, dated May 21 last year, said Shaik had "severe, uncontrolled
hypertension despite being on multiple drug therapy". It said Shaik needed more
tests to ensure his liver and eyes weren't damaged.
In November last year Shaik was admitted to hospital after suffering a mild
stroke. In May he spent 36 days at Albert Luthuli and before that he was in the
prison infirmary for two months. He also spent 83 days in a private ward at St
Augustine's hospital in Durban.
Yunus said his brother's wife, Zuleika, has been allowed to see her husband in
hospital.Related Articles
