NPA vs Zuma - Are They Going to Deal?

ANC President Jacob Zuma's lawyers and National Prosecuting Authority representatives have met to discuss the case against him, Zuma's attorney said on Monday.

"The NPA meeting has already taken place," Michael Hulley said.

Hulley said he would prefer it if the NPA divulged details of the meeting. An NPA spokesperson was not immediately available to comment.

"They would make an announcement, they are the institution that controls (those matters)."

ANC spokesperson Carl Niehaus confirmed that a meeting had taken place.

But this did not mean there was talk about a deal.

"I know that they have met. As far as I know, it was basically just dealing with the technicalities around what happened after the SCA judgment... You can expect that there should be meetings," he said.

Zuma won a bid in the Pietermaritzburg High Court last year to have the corruption prosecution against him set aside on the grounds that he had not been invited to make representations regarding the long-running case.

This was based on a Constitutional principle and a section of the NPA act.

However, the NPA won its appeal in the Supreme Court of Appeal and the NPA considers Zuma charged again.

Shortly after that judgment, Hulley said they were making arrangements to meet the NPA.

Meanwhile, papers for Zuma's next step, an appeal to the Constitutional Court, are expected to be filed "closer to the end of the month", said Hulley.

The application to the Constitution Court does not affect that.
