The DA has on Wednesday called on President Kgalema Motlanthe to establish a
probe into Schabir Shaik's early release from prison on medical parole.
DA MP and correctional services spokesperson James Selfe made this request in a
letter to Motlanthe. This after reports that the president on Monday said he
would consider such a probe if he was officially requested to do so.
During a visit to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange this week, Motlanthe said he
had yet to receive any requests for his intervention, but would consider such a
step if he was officially asked to do so.
"We would welcome any such step from the President," Selfe said in a statement
this morning [WED].
He also noted that the President could make use of a "built-in statutory
mechanism" which has not been invoked in this process - that of referring the
matter to the Correctional Supervision and Parole Review Board headed by Judge
Siraj Disai.
