The decision by British prosecutors from the Serious Fraud Office to lay
charges against BAE Systems is set to have major repercussions in South Africa.
The spotlight is set to be put again on South African politicians and public
servants who played a role in determining the choice of the arms or in
procedures involving offset requirements in the arms deal. Unconfirmed reports
suggest BAE had set up a £100-million fund to bribe South African politicians
and officials. ID leader Patricia de Lille said South Africans could find
themselves on trial in Britain if extradited.
