"The fact is there seems to be compelling evidence of massive
corruption in the arms deal, and yet attempts to properly investigate
the arms deal appear to have been neutered by deliberately under-resourcing
the Hawks arms deal investigation," said DA spokesman David Maynier.
This followed a Sunday Times report that South African investigators
were in possession of an explosive
memo where Shaik allegedly asked for a "success fee" of $3 million from
a German Consortium.
The consortium sold to South Africa four frigates
in the arms deal.
The memo was written by a former executive in the German Frigate
Consortium dated August 3, 1998.
Maynier said there was apparently one investigator in the Hawks assigned
to investigate the arms deal who has no computer equipment and limited
airtime on his cellphone.
"The investigation is hugely complex and will require a large team of
investigators to trawl through the mountain of documents in the
possession of the Hawks."
He said the Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa had dodged "parliamentary
questions from me that probe the resources being made available by his
department to the Hawks for the arms deal investigation".
